Rebuild Your Oral Health and Aesthetics with Bone Grafting

If you have lost teeth for a long time, your jawbone may lose a great deal of bone density. When this happens, you need bone grafting to replenish lost bone tissue. Periodontal Center of Georgia offers tissue lifting and bone grafting services to rebuild your bone, which improves your aesthetics and increases your chances of dental implant candidacy.

If you want to learn more about our grafting services, schedule an appointment with Drs. Jean-Max Jean-Pierre and Robert Creager.

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting simply means replacing a missing bone with a new one. During bone grafting, the doctor stitches a bone graft—obtained from your own body, /faqdonor, or animal sources—into the area with insufficient bone density. Bone grafting promotes bone regeneration and provides structural support.

Bone grafting is often recommended for various reasons, including.

  • To prepare the bone for implant placement
  • To improve your facial aesthetics
  • To augment the maxillary sinuses
  • To preserve the alveolar ridge after tooth extraction
  • To rebuild your bone after dental trauma

What can I expect from the bone grafting procedure?

The procedure starts with a consultation to examine your oral health and bone quality using dental x-rays and other diagnostic tools. After a dental exam, it’s time for the surgical procedure. We only start this process once you are comfortable. We’ll use modern aesthetics, gentle techniques, and other methods for a pain-free experience.

The dentist makes a small incision on the gums during surgery to expose the underlying bone. Then, we’ll stitch the bone graft to your bone and leave it to fuse with the bone. Sometimes, we may place a membrane between the bone and the soft tissues to allow optimal regeneration.

Over time, the bone graft material serves as a scaffold or framework for new bone growth, allowing the patient’s natural bone cells to proliferate and regenerate. As the graft integrates with the surrounding bone tissue, it becomes incorporated and remodels into healthy, functional bone.

What is a sinus lift?

Placing implants in the upper back jaw (posterior maxilla) is never easy. Many people who need implants in this area often have inadequate bone to support the implant. Additionally, after losing teeth, the sinus membrane—located above the upper molars and premolars—expands downward, reducing the space needed to place implants.

In such instances, you need a sinus lift or sinus augmentation procedure to ensure you can get dental implants even after tooth loss. The maxillary sinus membrane is lifted upwards to create space for a bone graft during a sinus lift.

Once a bone graft is placed and stitched in the upper back jaw, we’ll give it time to heal and fuse with the underlying bone. After the posterior maxilla achieves sufficient height and density, it enhances aesthetics and becomes stable enough to support an implant.
